Swami Vivekananda on Concentration

Image
" Concentration is the essence of all knowledge, nothing can be done without it. Ninety per cent of thought force is wasted by the ordinary human being, and therefore he is constantly committing blunders; the trained man or mind never makes a mistake. When the mind is concentrated and turned backward on itself, all within us will be our servants, not our masters.  The Greeks applied their concentration to the external world, and the result was perfection in art, literature, etc.  The Hindu concentrated on the internal world, upon the unseen realms in the Self, and developed the science of Yoga. Yoga is controlling the senses, will and mind. The benefit of its study is that we learn to control instead of being controlled.  Mind seems to be layer on layer. Our real goal is to cross all these intervening strata of our being and find God. The end and aim of Yoga is to realise God. To do this we must go beyond relative knowledge, go beyond the sense-world. The world is awa

Dog's Love for Sri Ramana Maharishi

Image
A diseased dog was trying to enter the gates of Ramanashram daily for 3 days. Other dogs and some Ashram people kept driving it away. One night Bhagavan slowly walked out of the hall without disturbing anyone. The person attending him thought he was going to the bathroom and followed him at a distance. After a couple of minutes, when Bhagavan did not return, he went looking for him and heard Bhaga van’s voice saying “ T hrupthiyachaa? ” “ Podhumaa ? ” ( Is it enough ?, Are you satisfied? ). He found Bhagavan squatting next to the diseased dog. The dog was licking Bhagavan all over his body including his face while Bhagavan was talking to the dog with these words. After a few minutes, Bhagavan got up and slept on the cot without bothering to clean himself.  Next day morning, the Ashramites found the dog lying dead near the entrance. The dog was holding on to its life to have Bhagavan's Darshan.

The Man who moved a mountain

“ My wife, Phalguni Devi, was seriously injured while crossing the hill to bring me water; I worked then on a farm across the hills. That was the day I decided to carve out a proper road through this hill,” he told us. “My love for my wife was the initial spark that ignited in me the desire to carve out a road. But what kept me working without fear or worry all those years was the desire to see thousands of villagers crossing the hill with ease whenever they wanted. When I started hammering the hill, people called me a lunatic but that steeled my resolve. ”  - Dashrath Manjhi Almost five decade ago, a landless farmer Dashrath Manjhi from Gahlor Ghati, of Gaya (a district of Bihar) resolved to end the difficulties of his villagers by shouldering a near impossible task of slitting a 300-feet-high hill apart to create a one-km passage. His village would nestle in the lap of rocky hills for which villagers would often face gigantic troubles for crossing small distance b

Realizing Self

Image
Question: You say one can realize the Self by a search for it. What is the character of this search? Bhagavan Ramanar: You are the mind or think that you are the mind. The mind is nothing but thoughts. Now behind every particular thought there is a general thought, which is the `I', that is yourself. Let us call this `I' the first thought. Stick to this `I'-thought and question it to find out what it is. When this question takes strong hold on you, you cannot think of other thoughts. Question: When I do this and cling to my self, that is, the 'I'-thought, other thoughts come and go, but I say to myself `Who am I ?' and there is no answer forthcoming. To be in this condition is the practice. Is it so? Bhagavan Ramanar : This is a mistake that people often make. What happens when you make a serious quest for the Self is that the `I'-thought disappears and something else from the depths takes hold of you and that is not the `I' which commenced th

Vallalar Birthday Today

Vallalar was born in South Arcot district , at a village called Maruthur, located near Chidambaram. His father Ramaiah Pillai was a village Munsif, and his mother was Chinnamayar. He was born on 5th October 1823 as a 5th child to this noble couple. Once a great Saint came to Chinnamayar for some food. She served him with a great respect! Pleased with the service of Chinnamayar, the saint offered her noble ash as Prasadam and blessed her saying " You shall very soon have a son like me born onto you ". It is said that the saint was Lord Siva himself. After receiving the noble ash, Chinnamayar had Vallalar as her 5th child! They named him after Lord Siva as Ramalingam. When he was 5 months baby, his parents took him to Lord Nataraja's temple in Chidambaram. The 5 month old Ramalingam laughed towards Lord Siva and waved his hands towards the deity. The temple priest assured the parents that the baby was a sacred child of Lord Nataraja. When Ramalingam was 6 m
