Quotes Of Swami Vivekananda

Image
* Seek only after one thing, and that, God! * To obtain Bhakti, seek the company of holy men who have Bhakti, and read books like the Gita and the  Imitation of Christ; always think of the attributes of God. * Brahmacharya should burn like the fire of God within the veins. * Concentration is the essence of all knowledge, nothing can be done without it. * All our struggle is for freedom. We seek neither misery nor happiness, but freedom, freedom alone. * This is the one central idea in the Gita: work incessantly, but be not attached to it. * No one can get anything unless he earns it. This is an eternal law. * When the soul wants to depend upon nothing, not even upon life, that is the height of philosophy, the height of manhood. * The strong, the well-knit, the young, the healthy, the daring alone are fit to be Yogis. * This is the gist of all worship  to be pure and to do good to others. * There is no other teacher but your own soul. * The only test ...

11 September 1893 Parliament of World's Religions

Image
The Parliament of Religions opened on 11 September 1893 at the Art Institute of Chicago. On this day Vivekananda gave his first brief address. He represented India and Hinduism.Though initially nervous, he bowed to Saraswati, the goddess of learning and began his speech with, " Sisters and brothers of America! ".To these words he got a standing ovation from a crowd of seven thousand, which lasted for two minutes. When silence was restored he began his address. He greeted the youngest of the nations in the name of " the most ancient order of monks in the world, the Vedic order of sannyasins, a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. " And he quoted two illustrative passages in this relation, from the Bhagavad Gita—" As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, so, O Lord, the different paths which men take, through different tendencies, various though they appear, cr...

Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi's Words.

Image
"Whatever you yearn for, that you will get." "Everyone can break down something, but how many can build it up?" "Forbearance is a great virtue; there is no other like it." "The purpose of one's life is fulfilled only when one is able to give joy to another." "As wind removes the cloud, so the name of God destroys the cloud of worldliness." -Sri Sarada Devi.

Letter from Swami Vivekananda to Shashi Maharaj

Image
Now, let me give you some instructions. This letter is meant for you. Please go through these instructions once a day and act up to them. I have got Sarada's letter , he is doing good work , but now we want organization. To him, Brother Tarak, and others please give my special love and blessings. The reason why I give you these few instructions is that there is an organising power in you , the Lord has made this known to me , but it is not yet fully developed. Through His blessings it will soon be. That you never lose your centre of gravity is an evidence of this, but it must be both intensive and extensive. 1. All the Shastras hold that the threefold misery that there is in this world is not natural, hence it is removable. 2. In the Buddha Incarnation the Lord says that the root of the Adhibhautika misery or, misery arising from other terrestrial beings, is the formation of classes (Jati); in other words, every form of class-distinction, whether based on birth, or acquireme...

Sri Krishna Janmasthami

Image
Krishna Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami tithi, the eighth day of the dark half or Krishna Paksha of the month of Shraavana. Sri Krishna is considered as the eighth avatar (incarnation) of Lord Vishnu's. SOME INCIDENTS IN THE LIFE OF SRI RAMAKRISHNA : Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa used to ecstatically enjoy himself in the worship of the Goddess in the temple built by Rani Rasamani. One night thieves broke into the temple and carried away all the jewels on the idol of Krishna in the temple. With a view to carrying on his regular priestly duties, he went to Rani Rasamani’s nephew, Mathuranath, and told him, " Sir, thieves have stollen all the jewels on the idol. " Mathuranath was angry and proceeded with Ramakrishna to the temple. Losing his temper and balance of mind, he burst out anger, " Oh Krishna! Are you not ashamed of yourself? If you are not able to protect your jewels on your own idol, how are you going to protect the whole world? Were you...

Swami Premananda‏ alias BabuRam

Image
July 31, 1918 Mother : Listen, my child. However spiritual a man may be, he must pay the tax for the use of the body to the last farthing. But the difference between a great soul and an ordinary man is this: the latter weeps while leaving this body, whereas the former laughs. Death seems to him a mere play. Ah, my dear Baburam [Swami Premananda] came to Sri Ramakrishna while he was a mere boy. Sri Ramakrishna used to make great fun with the boys. Naren [Swami Vivekananda] and Baburam would roll on the ground with sidesplitting laughter. While living in the Cossipore garen, I was once climbing the steps, carrying a pitcher with five pounds of milk. I felt giddy, and the milk spilled on the ground. My heels were dislocated. Naren and Baburam ran there and took care of me. There was a great inflammation of the feet. Sri Ramakrishna heard of the accident and said to Baburam, " Well, Baburam, it is a nice mess I am in now. Who will cook my food? Who will feed me now? ...

Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna and Young Narendra

Image
Once, in his room at Dakshineswar, Sri Ramakrishna was speaking about the sadhana prescribed for the Vaishnavas. Many devotees were present, including the young Narendra (Swami Vivekananda). Sri Ramakrishna said that a Vaishnava is expected to cultivate the following qualities: (i) compassion for living beings, (ii) taste for God's name, and (iii) service to devotees of God. While uttering these words, he entered into samadhi. After coming down from that state he started speaking in an exalted mood: Compassion for living beings! "Who are you to be compassionate to anybody? An insignificant creature you are! Who are you to show compassion? No; no. It is not compassion to jivas but service to them as Shiva " (shiva jnane jiva seva). Gradually, he came down to the normal plane. Soon after hearing these words Narendra declared that he had received a new light through the words of the Master. God willing, he would translate these words of the Master into action.

Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi

One day I asked the Mother about liberation and devotion. In reply she said, " Liberation may be granted at any moment. But God is reluctant to bestow devotion. " And she left the place immediately. She said these words in such a way that it appeared that to grant liberation was in her hand. I asked her one day, " Mother, sometimes when I see certain persons on the road, I feel that they are well-known to me. Later, on enquiry, I learn that they are either devotees of the Master or of you. Why do they appear so familiar even when seen suddenly for the first time? " The Mother replied, " The Master used to say, 'Suppose there is a clump of weed; if one pulls at a weed, the whole clump is affected. The weeds are related to one another like the branches of a plant. " Another day I asked her, " Mother, all other Incarnations survived their spiritual consorts (Sakti), but why this time did the Master pass away leaving you behind? " The Mother ...
