EUREKA RUN 2011

Image
Eureka Child Foundation, over the last fifteen years have worked, chiefly, in Tamil Nadu to ensuring quality education and healthcare reaches the poorest. To clarify, in demanding quality education all we require is that children in each class be able to perform the tasks the minimum curriculum prescribes. The organisation as a whole (including the chapters abroad) was awarded The Times of India Social Impact Award this year for Global Contribution to India. A "Eureka Run" was organised last year on Nov. 14th, Children's Day, to raise awareness about the quality of education the poorest in Tamil Nadu receive. A total of 1,500 runners aged between 2 and 75 years showed their support running a 5 kilometer stretch on Chennai's Marina Beach. The money raised at this event has transformed the lives of 500 children. This year the event is to take place on Saturday, 12th of November 2011.   Funds will be raised by charging a registration fee of Rs. 250. Each registratio...

Influence of Swami Vivekananda on Anna Hazare

Image
Anna Hazare was greatly influenced by Swami Vivekananda’s teachings. It was at that particular moment that Hazare took an oath to dedicate his life in the service of humanity, at the age of 26. He decided not not to let go of a life time by being involved merely in earning the daily bread for the family. That’s the reason why he pledged to be a bachelor.   At times, Hazare used to be frustrated with life and wondered about the very existence of human life. His mind yearned to look out for a solution to this simple and basic question. His frustration reached the peak level and at one particular moment, he also contemplated suicide. For this, he had also penned a two page essay on why he wants to live no more. Fortunately for him, inspiration came from the most unexpected quarters ?at the book stall of the railway station of New Delhi, where he located then. He came across a book of Swami Vivekananda and he immediately bought it.     He was ...

The Battle of Saragarhi

Image
UNESCO has selected the best 10 wars of the history and one of them is Battle of Saragarhi. I am not sure why our school books mentions only about the wars which we lost. The funny thing is Our Indian schools have forgot to mention about this war in our school books but the Government of  France has included this war incident in their national school of curriculum . The military action at Saragarhi is taught to students the world over and particularly to students in France. This is a real incident, where only 21 Indian soldiers fought with 10,000 Afghan and Orakzai tribesmen and finally we won that war . Battle of Saragarhi - Forgotten wars of the Indian history: The Battle of Saragarhi, one of history's most famous last stands, was fought during the Tirah Campaign on 12 September 1897 between twenty-one Sikhs of the 4th Battalion (then 36th Sikhs) of the Sikh Regiment of British India, defending an army post, and 10,000 Afghan and Orakzai tr...

July 26th The Kargil Day

Image
The nation will on Monday remember its soldiers who were killed in the summer of 1999 while protecting the Kargil heights in Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistani raiders and camouflaged regular troops in an audacious invasion attempt that was met with heroic deeds and a decisive military victory. Officers and soldiers as well as families of many of those killed will place wreaths at the war memorial in the capital. More than 500 Indian soldiers were killed in the Kargil war that lasted two long months. In the past 11 years, the day has been marked by emotive gathering as parents and siblings of soldiers assemble at various places for functions to pay homage to their loved ones who perished while fighting Pakistani raiders in the high altitude and inhospitable battleground. The war took place on the peaks of Kargil near the Line of Control - the de facto border that divides Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Like in the better known Tiger Hill and Tololing, heavy fighting took place...
